Virtue Lost?

I was watching a video interview of Tom Wolfe (author of The Right Stuff, Bonfire of the Vanities, and other books) in which he was discussing his new book, Back to Blood.  One of the themes of this new book is that the US is about to enter a period of lost virtues.  In fact, his book is based upon an environment in which all virtues have disappeared, replaced by the blood relations that people share in common (Latino gangs in his book).

As the great philosophers and masters of the fine arts will attest, the virtues are critical for each of us to achieve happiness.  What is even more unsettling is that without the virtues, happiness will clearly not be reached; but, perhaps more importantly, society will not flourish.

We need the individuals, you and me, to strive for happiness so that a series of gears is put in motion that will add to the greater good of society.  It is not society that is to save the individual, but the individual that is to save society!  Strange in today’s world.
